There isn’t a lot of Alan Rickman’s work that I don’t like, but I think Start a Family is one of them.
I loved Alan Rickman. He was my favourite actor, and I was so sad when he died. I started Alan Rickman Day as a way to remember ALL his work, not just Harry Potter and not just Die Hard, although he was amazing in both.
That’s why I have to talk about the music video for ‘Start a Family’ by Texas. Now, Texas previously released a music video for their song, ‘In Demand’ which Alan Rickman was also in. That video was actually really good; you can check out my review for it here.
Start a Family, however, is not.
I’m not saying that I don’t like the song. I LOVE the song. It’s amazing. There’s just something about it. If I were going to make a movie of my life, and I had to create a soundtrack, Start a Family would perfect for those introspective moments where the best choice is unclear, especially the part very last rendition of the chorus starting from 2:37.
But. The music video is HORRIBLE. I can’t fully explain why; you just have to watch it.
Oh, but first, I have to mention the one redeeming part of the video: Alan Rickman…speak-sings…?….from 1:10-1:51. The only problem with that is that they speak cutting away from him and to whatever is happening in the forest. Had they focused on Alan Rickman instead of trying to win the award for most confusing editing, the video would have been better.
Anyway, here it is, and here’s the link if the video below doesn’t work:
What is that? Seriously, what is it? Why is she in a forest? What’s with the dog? Is she dead? How come Alan Rickman keeps disappearing? If she’s dead, did he kill her? I think it’s supposed to be artsy, but I don’t think art is worthwhile if no one understands it.
Of course, I could be wrong. Maybe I’m the only one who doesn’t understand it. Do YOU understand if? If you do, could you explain it to me?
